PokerStars Will Depart Australian Market by Mid-September
As expected, PokerStars will leave the Australian market by mid-September after the Australian Senate finalized passage of an amendment to the country’s online gambling laws. In the run-up to the bill’s passage last week, PokerStars had emailed Australian players detailing their intentions.
One of the bigger online gambling markets in the world, the departure comes at a time when poker rake is down 5.9% over the last year and more seasoned players are frustrated with PokerStars policies that are putting recreational players in the forefront.
Despite PokerStars departure in Australia next month, the largest online poker room said that they hope that can reenter the market at a future date. “We’re proud to have seen the Australian poker community grow so strong over the last decade,” the emails said. “We do respect the Australian Government’s decision in taking steps to protect consumers and hope that in time we’ll be able to serve real-money poker to you again.”
